What Is a Gap Night? (And What Does One Cost You?)

A gap night is an unbooked night between two reservations that your own rules made unsellable. Here's the definition, the causes, and how to count what yours cost.

What is a gap night?

A gap night — also called an orphan night — is a single unbooked night (or short run of nights) that falls between two confirmed reservations and cannot be booked under a property's normal rules.

Example: a guest checks out Saturday morning and the next guest checks in Sunday afternoon. Saturday night is a gap night. The property is empty, cleaned, and ready — but if your minimum stay is 2 or 3 nights, or Saturday isn't one of your allowed check-in days, no guest can book that one Saturday at all.

Why do gap nights happen?

Most gap nights come from booking rules, not from a lack of demand:

  • Minimum-stay rules. The most common cause. A 3-night minimum plus weekend-to-weekend bookings manufactures 1-night gaps by design.
  • Fixed check-in days. Saturday-to-Saturday patterns strand midweek nights.
  • Cancellations. A cancelled stay can split a booked block into fragments too short to sell.
  • Calendar blind spots. Gaps appear between bookings on different channels and go unnoticed for days or weeks.

How much do gap nights cost?

Guides cite roughly 5–15% of potential annual revenue for properties with strict minimums and weekend-heavy patterns (Hostaway's gap-night guide). The arithmetic for your own property is simple:

Gap nights last year × your average nightly rate = your gap-night cost

Count them: for each property, look at last year's calendar and mark every night that sat empty between two bookings and couldn't have been booked under your rules at the time. Multiply by your average rate. Most hosts are surprised by the total — and that's before counting the cleaning, utility, and fixed costs you paid while the property sat empty.

A related number worth knowing: filling gap nights also lifts occupancy and revenue per available room, which in turn supports listing visibility — empty inventory drags on every metric downstream of it.

How do you fix gap nights?

Make them bookable first, then offer, price and promote them, in this order:

  1. Make them bookable. Drop the minimum stay for the gap window only (flexible/dynamic minimums). This alone converts dead inventory into sellable inventory.
  2. Offer them to the guests around them. A stay-extension offer to the guest checking out, or an early check-in offer to the guest arriving, fills a gap with zero extra turnover.
  3. Price them specifically. A gap-night discount on those dates only — not a month-wide cut.
  4. Promote the exact dates. "Saturday night just opened" with a booking link beats "we have availability" every time.
  5. Automate detection. Gaps recur constantly. A system that checks your calendar on a schedule and promotes each gap right away beats a monthly calendar review.

How does Vacancy Vibe help with gap nights?

Vacancy Vibe re-checks your connected calendars on a schedule (every 1–3 hours for Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO and Lodgify iCal links; about every 10–15 minutes for most other feeds) and detects gap nights, then generates ready-to-publish posts and an email for each one — so a gap gets promoted while it can still be booked, not found weeks later. Publishing to LinkedIn and X works today; Instagram, Facebook and Meta ads are pending Meta app approval. Plans from $29/month, 14-day free trial.
